Ohio TRIO Quarterly Newsletter
TRIO programs are a set of federally funded programs geared to assert our nation's commitment to providing college access for all Americans regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance. In support of this commitment, Congress established a series of programs to help low-income Americans enter college, graduate and move on to successfully participate in America's economic and social life exness. These programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 as a direct result of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. TRIO Programs initially began with three programs and later expanded to seven. As mandated by Congress, two-thirds of the students served must come from families with incomes at 150 percent or lower of the federal poverty line, in which neither parent has graduated from college (first generation). Further, TRIO programs serve students with disabilities and veterans of the US military.
